Presentation

DERECHO (Defense of European Rights and Excellence for Consumers Harmonization) is a Jean Monnet Module of the European Union coordinated by CEU San Pablo University. Its mission is to lead innovation and strengthen the knowledge and implementation of Consumer Law in the European Union, with particular attention to digital fairness, sustainability, and the harmonization of consumer protection within the Single Market. The project combines teaching, research, and outreach, bringing European law closer to society through training activities, academic publications, and awareness-raising initiatives.

The project is structured around three major strategic pillars aligned with the European Union’s pro-consumer policies: online and offline regulatory harmonization, Digital Fairness for a just digital transition, and sustainability within the framework of the Green Transition.

The project addresses these areas through teaching, research, and outreach:

  • Excellence in Teaching: Through specialized teaching in European Union consumer law aimed at high-achieving students, Erasmus+ participants, and students with an interest in EU Law.
  • Impactful Research: By generating cutting-edge knowledge at the European level (papers, technical notes, conferences and seminars, collaborations with other universities, etc.) and establishing a new peer-reviewed International Scientific Journal on Consumer Law, published in open access (OER) starting in 2027. In Q4 2025, a new open-access collective volume will be published on the recent consumer protection rules adopted by the European Union over the past five years.
  • Public Outreach: By bringing the EU closer to the general public, combating disinformation, and fostering dialogue between academia and society through social media and dissemination activities. This includes social media outreach, knowledge transfer in schools and other relevant target groups, engagement and advisory work with consumer associations, and student participation in the Public Consultation of the forthcoming Digital Fairness Act.
